A
poetic powerhouse, Helena D. Lewis is a passionate performer gifted
with keen insight. Ms. Lewis graduated from Rutgers University with
a Bachelors in Biology and is a former member of the poetic trio
2 Dogs & A Cat, Nubian Expressions, Uninhibited Theater Company,
and the undefeated New Jersey First Wave Slam Team.
Lewis
was a member of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe's 2000 National Slam Team
which placed third at the National Poetry Slam in Providence, Rhode
Island. She has performed at numerous colleges, universities, and
venues across the country including, Cornell University, DePauw
University, Ramapo College, Rutgers University, New York University,
Loyola College, Seton Hall University, Slammanomics in Baltimore,
Maryland and The Marlin, in South Beach, Florida.
Lewis,
a Nuyorican 2000 semifinalist, Soul Cafe' 2001 finalist, and Hottest
Poets MTV Networks 2002 finalist is at the forefront of New Jersey's
poetic renaissance and has been a featured poet at WBLS's "After
Work Tuesdays" at Le Bar Bat. She has opened for Def Jam comedians
and has featured at several national California slam venues including,
Mambo Mambo in Oakland, Second Sundays in San Francisco, Starry
Plough in Berkeley, and the Silicon Valley Poetry Slam in San Jose.

Lewis
has done freelance work for Source Magazine and represented the
Nuyorican Poets Cafe in a poetic victory at the First Annual Love
Jones Slam in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She has performed Off-Broadway
at the Public Theater in the first ever Sondheim Slam Production
and her one-woman play, Just Me, recently debuted at the annual
Urban Theater Festival in New York's Here Arts Center. She is currently
working on her second spoken word CD entitled, "Simple Yet Complex,"
and is the author of the chapbook, "From The Gut."
In
addition to her career as a spoken word artist, Ms. Lewis is a social
worker who developed, implemented, and supervised a drop-in center
for drug-addicted prostitutes for the Community At Risk Reduction
(CARR) Program in Newark, New Jersey. Ms. Lewis currently works
with male prisoners and lectures on developing community based organizations,
the dynamics of drug addiction and prostitution, and effective street
outreach to individuals at high risk for HIV/AIDS. Lewis also teaches
performance poetry seminars at an alternative high school for troubled
teens and has conducted a series of poetry seminars for inner city
youths with "Communities In Schools".
